Your Complete Guide to Extras Cover, Rebates and Claims (2026)

If you’ve ever wondered whether your private health insurance will help cover the cost of seeing a chiropractor, you’re certainly not alone. It’s one of the most common questions we hear at Centenary Chiropractic Centre.

The good news is that many Australian private health funds provide benefits for chiropractic care through Extras cover, but the amount you can claim depends on your insurer, your level of cover and your remaining annual limits.

In this guide, we’ll explain how chiropractic claims work, which major health funds generally include chiropractic benefits, how to claim your rebate, and how to make the most of your health insurance.

Please Note (2026)

Health fund benefits, annual limits, waiting periods and rebate amounts change regularly.

The information below is accurate at the time of writing (2026) and is intended as a general guide only. Before beginning treatment, always check directly with your health fund to confirm your current chiropractic benefits, annual limits and eligibility.

Does Private Health Insurance Cover Chiropractic?

Yes—provided you have the appropriate Extras cover.

Unlike visits to your GP or specialist, chiropractic is generally not covered by Medicare unless you’re eligible under a Chronic Disease Management (formerly EPC) referral from your GP.

Instead, most Australians claim chiropractic through their private health insurance Extras cover.

If your policy includes chiropractic treatment, your health fund will usually pay part of the consultation fee, while you pay the remaining gap.

This means many patients can continue receiving regular care while reducing their overall chiropractic costs.

Do I Need Extras Cover or Hospital Cover?

One of the biggest misconceptions is that Hospital cover automatically includes chiropractic.

In almost every case, it doesn’t.

Instead, you need an Extras policy that specifically includes chiropractic cover.

Many insurers bundle chiropractic alongside other allied health services including:

  • Physiotherapy
  • Osteopathy
  • Podiatry
  • Remedial massage
  • Exercise physiology
  • Acupuncture

The higher your level of cover, the greater your annual benefits may be.

If you’re unsure whether your private health insurance cover includes chiropractic, simply contact your insurer or ask our reception team—we’re happy to help you understand your policy.

Which Australian Health Funds Include Chiropractic Benefits?

As of 2026, most major Australian private health funds offer chiropractic benefits through selected Extras policies.

If you belong to another health fund, there’s still a good chance you’ll have chiropractic cover, provided you’ve selected the right Extras policy.

How Much Can I Claim Back?

This is probably the question patients ask most.

Unfortunately, there isn’t a single answer.

Your chiropractic benefit depends on several factors including:

  • your health fund
  • your Extras product
  • your remaining annual limit
  • whether you’ve already claimed other allied health services during the year.

Some funds pay a fixed dollar amount per visit.

Others reimburse a percentage of the consultation fee.

Many combine chiropractic with physiotherapy, osteopathy or remedial massage under one annual limit.

For example, if your annual limit for manual therapies is $500 and you’ve already used $350 for physiotherapy, you’ll have $150 remaining to use for chiropractic.

Are There Waiting Periods?

Usually, yes. Most insurers require a waiting period before you can begin claiming chiropractic benefits.

For many funds this is around two months, although it can vary.

If you’re switching insurers and maintaining equivalent cover, your waiting period may be waived.

Always check with your insurer before booking if you’ve recently joined or upgraded your private health insurance.

How Do I Claim My Chiropractic Rebate?

Claiming is usually quick and straightforward.

Most chiropractic clinics, including Centenary Chiropractic Centre, offer HICAPS claiming.

This means you simply:

  1. Bring your health fund card.
  2. Swipe it at reception.
  3. Your rebate is processed instantly.
  4. You only pay the remaining gap.

There’s no paperwork, and no waiting for reimbursement.

If your insurer doesn’t support HICAPS, we can provide a receipt so you can submit your claim online through your health fund.

Does Medicare Cover Chiropractic?

Generally speaking, Medicare does not pay for routine chiropractic consultations.

However, there are some important exceptions.

If your GP determines you have a chronic health condition that requires multidisciplinary management, you may be eligible for a Chronic Disease Management Plan (formerly known as an EPC).

Under this program, eligible patients can receive a limited number of allied health services, including chiropractic, with a Medicare rebate.

We’ve written a detailed guide explaining this process if you’d like to learn more.

Outside these programs, most patients use either:

  • private health insurance
  • DVA
  • WorkCover Queensland
  • self-funded appointments.

Can I Use Private Health Insurance with EPC, DVA or WorkCover?

Each funding pathway has different rules.

EPC (Chronic Disease Management)

If you receive a Medicare rebate under your GP referral, you generally cannot also claim your private health insurancefor the same consultation.

DVA

Eligible veterans receiving funded treatment usually cannot claim the same appointment through private insurance.

WorkCover Queensland

If your accepted WorkCover claim covers the consultation, you generally won’t claim through your private health insurer as well.

However, if your approved sessions finish, your private cover may help continue treatment.

If you’re unsure which option is best, our team can explain the differences before your appointment.

Is Private Health Worth It If You See a Chiropractor Regularly?

For many people, yes. If you visit a chiropractor several times each year for ongoing management of back pain, neck pain, sports injuries or musculoskeletal concerns, your health insurance with chiropractic coverage may significantly reduce your overall treatment costs.

When comparing health insurance policies, don’t just look at the monthly premium.

Consider:

  • annual chiropractic limits
  • waiting periods
  • combined therapy limits
  • other Extras you use, such as dental, optical or physiotherapy.

The best policy isn’t necessarily the cheapest; it’s the one that matches your healthcare needs.

Choosing the Best Health Insurance for Chiropractic

If seeing a chiropractor is important to you, consider asking these questions before selecting a policy:

  • Does the policy include chiropractic cover?
  • What is the annual limit?
  • Is chiropractic grouped with other therapies?
  • What are the waiting periods?
  • How much can I claim per visit?
  • Is there a preferred provider network?

These questions can help you find the right health insurance for chiropractic without paying for benefits you won’t use.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a referral to claim chiropractic?

No. Most private health insurance claims do not require a referral.

Can I visit any chiropractor?

Most insurers require you to see a registered chiropractor.

Is chiropractic covered by Medicare?

Only in limited circumstances, such as under a GP-managed Chronic Disease Management Plan.

Can I claim physiotherapy and chiropractic?
