Neck pain is a common occurrence within our society. Unfortunately it is an increasing problem as the population spends more time sitting in front of computers and generally having a less active lifestyle. 

Results from a 2002 study into treating neck pain have been released. The study compared the relative effectiveness of adjustments, physical therapy (exercises/stretching) and continued care by a general practitioner. It was found that ‘manual therapy’ involving specific adjustments and mobilisations was a far more efficient form of treatment for relieving neck pain over the trial period of six weeks. Success was determined by the patient being either ‘completely recovered’, or ‘much improved’. Adjustments were deemed successful in 68.3% of cases whilst physical therapy helped 50.8%. painkillers in combination with counselling and education managed to assist only 35.9% of patients. This study continues to demonstrate the value of adjustments when they are delivered by a skilled chiropractor.  

Of even more interest is similar study comparing the effectiveness of the three treatments both initially and also assessing the long-term outcomes of treatment six months and one year later. 

Not only were adjustments shown to be more effective for pain management during the initial six weeks, they were also found to be by far the best treatment for long term improvement at both six and twelve months.
